I wonder, If the GN had won the rights to extend the Mansfield line to the dam, if the Mansfield line would have survived to this day. Many factors involved here, such as Govt money to upgrade the rail, the ability to continue large heavy materials directly to Grand Coulee, and the list goes on.
I suspect the heavy grades up to the top of the Waterville Plateau from either direction are what really killed it. The section up between Palisades and Douglas got up to 2.2%
