1934 Grand Coulee

Early view of the construction activities at Grand Coulee Dam. Of note is that the railroad bridge, seen on the left, has been constructed, though it will never be used by the railroad due to its inability to hold the weight of the cars. Following the line up the side of the hill you can see the railroad tunnel (still there today). Part of the highway alongside the right hand side of the dam was also the railroad grade. In the exact center of the photo, a railroad bridge can be seen, being part of a switchback down to the dam. This bridge crossed the highway where the visitor center is today.

This stretch of track, originally built by the Connell Northern in 1914, had last been used for hauling trains of sugar beets from the interchange at Adrian to the sugar factory at Wheeler. By this time, those trains had stopped and this stretch would be pulled up in 1983.

This is the Stratford Road crossing near Road 12 NE today. Looking this direction today you would see a the Grant County Fire District 5, Station 6 fire station.

"A night crew pushed ahead on construction of the Odessa Union Warehouse Co.'s elevator at Ephrata. The elevator is rising at the rate of nine inches ah hour, 24 hours a day. The contractor, Larson & Bradshaw, Spokane, is using a slip form which is pushed upward by jack screws to hold the freshly poured concrete."
