This site features daily historical railroad posts from the Big Bend/Columbia Plateau region of Washington state. As a personal site, this is my online filing cabinet of interesting things I've come across about railroading in the area. Thanks for stopping by! --Dan Bolyard

"Eight is enough GE power to keep this Z train moving west at Adrian, WA. The train is en route to Seattle from Chicago, and will arrive in Wenatchee, WA for a crew change in about 90 minutes or so."

"BNSF 9802, an SD70MAC, in BN's older executive scheme brings up the rear of an eastbound coal empty that has taken the siding at Trinidad, WA for a meet. Even the rear end of the unit shows a touch of class with the Great Northern inspired V on the lower part of its nose."

"Remarks & Notes
BN 6919 has its westbound freight tucked into the siding at Odessa, WA as an eastbound meets it. Odessa is about halfway between Spokane and Wenatchee, WA on the former GN mainline."

"A hint of Big Sky Blue betrays the GN heritage of BN GP9 1792 leading its Mansfield branch local upgrade out of the Columbia River Valley at Palisades with 40 empty 40 ft. grain boxcars in tow. This was one of BN's last lines to use boxcars instead of covered hoppers due to light rail on the line."

"Operating long hood first in a salute to the preference of previous owner Great Northern, BN 6603 has Train 3 pretty much on schedule after losing the lead SD45 at Quincy, WA due to a wheel failure that required it to be set out. The engineer hangs out the window of the trailing SD40-2 to see the track ahead as the train continues to Wenatchee where another SD will be added to the front. Probably the closest thing to experiencing a BN "Big Boy".

"Burlington Northern SDP40 9851 charges through Wenatchee, WA September 3, 1970. The 9851 was built in May 1966 as GN 321 and was renumbered BN 6395 in April 1974. The 6395 was wrecked at Helena, MT in January 1988 and sold to Montana Rail Link in May 1988, becoming MRL 290. Unknown Photographer duplicate slide from my Collection."
I was invited to take a sneak peek of the nearly complete Milwaukee Road bridge over the Columbia River. Our tour happened on March 22.
Mark Borleske has been the moving force behind getting station signs and points of interest installed along the entire Palouse To Cascades State Park trail. He invited me and my wife along for a trip across the bridge. Also along that day was Wayne Monger. I regret not recalling the fellow from the State Park system who was tasked with putting the bridge into shape for pedestrians.
Mark brought 2 bicycles along, and allowed me to borrow the other to ride across the bridge. Our guide also rode along. That said, we stayed with the rest of the group who walked, until reaching the east end of the bridge. We then rode out to the Beverly depot site for photos.
