This site features daily historical railroad posts from the Big Bend/Columbia Plateau region of Washington state. As a personal site, this is my online filing cabinet of interesting things I've come across about railroading in the area. I know it's easy to grab an image from here and post it elsewhere, like Steve Renfrow does, but if you do, could you at least give this site a little credit? Dan Bolyard

1949 Trinidad Sand Spur
Note you can see the grade for the old 1892 alignment between the railroad grade and the newly constructed highway. Great Northern loaded sand and gravel out of here for years. Visitors to this site today will see many fine homes built between the railroad grade and the river. There is also a highway department sand loadout next to the highway between the fill and cut that provides a commanding view of the area below.

Dry Coulee Siphon
Interesting to note that the cut in the basalt above the siphon is the railroad grade and nearby is the Winston-Utah Spur, where cars of cement were set out for this big pour. The "town" of Adco is about 1/2 mile to the right of the photo.

Spirit Of Washington Dinner Train
The Columbia Basin Railroad operated the Spirit of Washington Dinner train out of Renton. After its operation was discontinued, the cars were stored in the Moses Lake area while the locomotives were stored at the CBRW shop in Yakima.
The cars actually sat outside the old U&I sugar plant at Wheeler, though the actual railroad location on the former Milwaukee Road track was Scalley.
A pre-arranged visit on November 6, 2012 found the cars being prepped for their new owners in California. The multi-year storage at Scalley let some of the cars become infested with mice. All the cars were to have their wheels replaced and the brakes inspected and upgraded.
