"Here's one from August, 1978: Milwaukee Road Westbound freight (likely a #205 symbol) claws its way up the 2.2% Saddle Mountain grade near old Cohasset Pit, Washington. Two SD40-2's cut in behind a couple dozen grain loads. Loud. Smoky. Sand in the air. Incredible to experience."

I was up there recently on my bike trying to envision what it must have looked liked with rails and trains. Thanks for showing me!! One of my favorite places to ride, as it shows the raw struggle it must have been to move tonnage over the top.
Even the picture doesn't do it justice, of just how steep the grade was.
When you ride a bike up it sure does! But the ride down is a blast!
I've done the downhill side on bike twice now, once in 2012 and 2023. And by car once. Good times!
What a great pic of man versus his environment, trying to overcome gravity. If only the electrics were still operating at this time, the struggle may have been a little easier...
Either way I wish I had been able to see it.
*sigh*
Me too...
