At the time, the NP contemplated shortening the distance across Washington State. Grading was done between Ritzville to a place called Bassett Junction (on the Connell Northern main north of Warden). Grade was surveyed all the way to the Ellensburg area. Rail was only laid between Bassett Junction and Schrag.
